Percy-Details

Nach dem erneuten Studium der Vorlage, mussten Percys Abzeichen und Hufe noch mal überarbeitet werden. Das ist nun dabei herausgekommen:

When looking closely at the (small)reference piccies again, I noted that I had misinterpreted some ermine spots and that he had more dark areas down there. So I corrected that and here you see the almost finished hoofstriping, too.(The reference horse has very stripey feet, too)

Percy is beginning to take shape. There is still lots of detail to be painted, but one can already see now what he will look like when being finished. Pictures taking with and without flash light.

Glänzend! *g*

Da das Vorlagen-Pferd einen warmen braunen Glanz im / unter dem dunkelbraunen Fell hat, bekommt Percy den natürlich auch. Für den Glanz sorgt eine Farbe mit Metallic-Effekt. Das wird nachher aber kaum noch auffallen.

English Summary:
Shiny! The horse from whom Percy borrows his new colour has a very warm brownish gleam under his seal bay coat, so Percy is getting this, too. If you think he looks metallic now, that is because he does- the paint has a metallic effect. This will not show much in the end, though.

In Arbeit

Finally some in progress pics again!
Here you see Hyacinth who is getting all the small details painted currently and loves to show off her new ears.
Percy got his first paint layers but I still found some little dents I have previously overlooked and need to tend to them.
Mielahis is done as far as the sculpting part of it is considered- now he needs some sanding and prepping before painting.

Bevor ich krank wurde, hatte ich die meisten Modellierarbeiten an Percy fertig und habe ihn einmal Schwarz angemalt, um zusehen, wie er nun wirkt:




Im Moment bin ich dabei ihn abzuschleifen, eine Seite ist fast fertig. Und ich füge noch ein paar kleine Details hinzu, zum Beispiel am Maul oder den Ohren.


English Summary:
Before I got sick, I had finished all major resculpting on Percy and gave him a quick layer of black to have a glimpse on what he will be like when finished. Currently I am at sanding him all over and adding some little details as on his snout or ears. One side of him is almost done with sanding, I hope to progress this weekend.

Nachtrag

Nachdem ich viel zu tun hatte, dann krank war und wieder einiges um die Ohren hatte, haben sich hier so einige Bilder angesammelt, die nun nach und nach in den nächsten Einträgen auftauchen werden.

Back after long absence! I had much to do at first, then got sick, but now I am back to posting and soon commenting, too.
But boy I have lots of piccies and posts to write, kinda a backlog. They will come up the next days.
I start here with two cute birthday pressies that I got from Diana, the little donkey "Grisu" and the Schleich Friesian "Prins". Prins immediately made friends with his new companion "Shorty".
New posts and piccies are coming about Percy, Hyacinth and... Fleur, who had a surprise in store for me, LOL!!

Sooo und nun noch ein neuer Percy Post! Hier habe ich viel am Hals gearbeitet, was man auf diesen Bildern gar nicht so stark sieht.
Wichtig war aber auch dies- der Percy hatte vorher ja einen extrem kurzen Rücken. Um wieviel das verbessert wurde zeigt dieser Test mit dem Stocksattel. Der Sattel wurde für ein größeres Modell angepasst, hat nun aber Platz auch auf seinem Rücken:




Würde sagen, der Rücken ist nun so ok.

And the next Percy Post! I have done a lot on his neck area, but this does not show well in these pictures. What they show is just as important, though. In the beginning, Percy had very short back. How much this is fixed now shows the test with my stocksaddle that was originally made for a taller horse than Percy. Now it has room on his back, though, which means the improvement worked out right here, so to speak.

Vorne auf der Brust muss ich unbedingt noch was ändern, aber das hab ich vorher nicht hinbekommen, das mache ich nun als Letztes.

Status Percy, so to speak. I realise I am building in a new whopping error at the chest, but I have decided to fix it last, so rebuild of neck an shoulder comes first, then fixing of chest.

So langsam sieht man Fortschritte, allerdings ist der Hals nur 2D - also noch papierdünn, die Muskeln kommen jetzt, ich wollte nur schonmal die Form festlegen, bevor ich dann auch die Brust ausarbeite.

Slowly, one starts to see some progress- the outlines of the neck are defined, but right now, this is just 2D, so to speak, being very flat viewed from front or behind. Muscles and shape are being added and altered now, I just needed the outline so I can work on his chest, too.

Sooo, nochmal stramm mit Alufolie ausgestopft - und den Hals draufstecken.
Once more he was filled with tinfoil and the neck is loosely attached.

Ich habe erstmal nur den unteren Teil und den Kopf mit dem Drahtgestell verbunden. Wenn das fest sitzt, kann die Halsform noch Korrekturen bekommen bevor die Modelliermasse darüber gelegt wird.
For a start, I just fixed the wire within the body and the head. As soon as this is secure and stable, the actual shape of his neck can be corrected if need be and only then, the first layer of sculpting clay will be applied.


Und keine Sorge, der Schweif wird später nicht so gerade abstehen!
And no worries, the tailbone will be bent as soon as it is fixed.

Projekt Percy 2

Letztes Wochenende hat Percy mehrere heiße Bäder genommen und dazwischen wurde nochmal geföhnt:

Last weekend, Percy took several hot baths and got more hairdryer-treatment inbetween.

So langsam bekam ich so alle instabilen Bereiche frei von alter Modelliermasse. Deshalb habe ich nun gerade die offenen "Nähte" versorgt, damit er wieder schön stabil wird. Danach wird er wie zu Anfang gestopft und dann ist erstmal aufmodellieren angesagt.
Die verbliebenen Löcher schließe ich von außen.





Slowly I got rid off all the sculpting stuff in the potentially instable areas and so I could fix his open seams today. As soon as he is stabilized again, I can go on and get around to adding mass to his frontend again.
The remaining holes will be closed from the outside.

In diesem Post schreibe ich die englischen Erklärungen mal direkt unter den deutschen Text, das ist glaube ich leichter.
For this post, I'll write complete translations right under my text, so it is easier to keep up with the photos.

Vor Weihnachten kam Percy zu uns:
Just before Christmas, Percy arrived here:

Er gehört Diana und wurde vor Jahren von ihr aus so einem Grund-Modell verändert:
Hartland Arabian
He's owned by Diana und was a remake by herself- he was created using the body of a Hartland Arabian.

Sie hatte mich nun gebeten, ihn neu zu bemalen und zu hairen. Daraufhin hatte ich die Idee, das man dann ja auch gleich den etwas überdimensionierten Hals neumachen könnte und ich malte ein bisschen in dem Foto herum, um zuzeigen was ich meine:

She had asked me to refresh his paint and give him new hair, but I suggested making him a new neck, as the old one is a bit over-enthusiastic. So I scrawled around in the photo above to show what I mean.


Kürzlich habe ich nun angefangen, ihn auseinander zu nehmen:

Da auch Schultern und Brust zu "aufgebläht" wirkten, habe ich tief heruntergesägt und werde den Bereich mit neumodellieren.
Since shoulders and chest also had this "bloaty" look, I sawed him down liberally, and will resculpt the whole area.

Also habe ich fröhlich die Körperhöhle prall mit Alufolie gestopft...
So I happily stuffed him with tinfoil:

Noch im Detail:

Da ist alte Modelliermasse, vermutlich Efaplast auf dem Körper. Efaplast verbindet sich nicht dauerhaft stabil mit Plastik, also muss es entweder ab (ideale Lösung) oder zumindest gesichert werden, da wo es nicht abgeht.

There's old modelling clay on him, it looks like Efaplast, which is kinda a worst case, as this material will not bond with the plastic in a stable way. Sooner or later, it is going to crack.
So it must come off, as completely as possible. Where I can't get rid of it completely, I am going to secure the area at least.


Erstmal muss aber soviel wie möglich davon runter und das alte Apoxie, was stellenweise nicht ausgehärtet war, ebenfalls.
Da ich nicht auf die Bemalung Rücksicht nehmen muss und auch sonst viel neumodellieren werde, wird dafür hier einfach mal die brachiale Methode zum Einsatz kommen. Der Föhn ist dein Freund!

To get rid of as much as possible of it, and the old Apoxie which failed to harden fully in places,too, I had to take some more drastic measures here. Since I need not care for the paintjob, I can do this the hard way. *g*
The hairdryer is your friend!

Wohlgemerkt, der Haarföhn, der Heißluftföhn wäre viel zu heiß.
Mit dem Föhn habe ich den Körper an den zu bearbeitenden Stellen stark erwärmt und dann das Plastik sachte hin und her gebogen. Auf diese Weise entstehen spätestens beim Auskühlen Spannungsrisse in der Modelliermasse und man kann größere Platten abheben.
Achtung, die Stücke sind heiß!

Yup, the hairdryer, not the hotair gun, the latter would be much too hot. I heated him thoroughly and then started to twist and wiggle the surfaces. Usually cracks appear immediately, but at the latest when the plastic cools off. And then you can loosen large bits of the sculpting clay comparatively easily.
Beware those pieces are hot!


ACHTUNG! Bitte nicht an Eurem Lieblingsmodell ausprobieren! Das kann auch schiefgehen. Das Breyerplastik ist auch noch anders und wird sich in der Hitze schneller zusammenziehen.

ATTENTION! Do not try this on your most favourite model! There is no guarantee that it always works out well. Breyer plastic is also a bit different and will much faster melt and throw bubbles to which the mass to be removed might stick. This is rather the opposite of what you want, then.


Naja, damit bin ich im Moment gerade beschäftigt, möglichst schonend soviel Masse wie möglich abzulösen.
Wo ich schonmal dabei war, habe ich kontrolliert die Bauchnaht geöffnet, um die Beine des Modells enger zusammenstellen zu können, denn er stand schon arg breit.

While being busy with the "hot removal" of the stuff, I managed successfully to create a controlled seamsplit on the tummy. Like that, I could place the hooves closer together, as he stood very spreadout before.

So sieht er im Moment aus (damit es nicht so schlimm wirkt, hab ich mal den Kopf draufgesteckt. *g*), ich hab schon eine ziemlich genaue Vorstellung von dem fertigen Pferd, nun.

This is what he currently looks like. To keep the shock for the owner smaller *big grin* I loosely added his head.
In front of my mental eye, I can already see where he is going, which is a good sign.

Jetzt muss ich erstmal die restliche Masse loswerden und dann gibt es die nächsten Bilder von den weiteren Schritten.

Now I continue with getting rid of the sculpting clay and will then be back with the next steps and photos.
